Beginner Quilting Academy

A step-by-step program to give you the skills and confidence to make beautiful quilts from start to finish.

With Beginner Quilting Academy you will receive:

Tools & Materials

 

Module 1 is all about gathering your supplies and making sure that you have everything that you need to make your first quilt! You can either purchase one of our complete quilt kits, or shop for fabric on your own.

Module Highlights:

  • Sewing Machines - What do you really need out of your machine? I'll offer guidance for making your first sewing machine purchase. 
  • Supplies - You'll receive a checklist of the supplies that you really need to make your first quilt. No fluff!
  • Terminology - Are you scratching your head over quilting terminology? I'll give you a list of the most commonly used quilting terms and what they all mean.
  • Quilt Planning - Is the idea of how to plan a beautiful quilt overwhelming? We will walk through the whole planning process together so you end up with something that fits your style and that you love!
  • Fabric Basics - We will cover all that you need to know about quilting fabric: how to choose fabrics, fabric terminology,  precuts, prints and mixing fabric types.
  • Intro to Thread & Batting types
  • Setting Up Your Sewing Space

 

 

Cutting Fabric

 

In this module, we will cut all of our fabrics! I specifically chose a quilt pattern that uses a mix of precuts and yardage so that you can learn a few different techniques. You'll receive easy-to-read cutting instructions in which I walk you through each and every step. 

Module Highlights:

Want to know exactly how to use your pizza cutter thingy? Using either fabric that you purchase on your own, or one of our complete quilt kits, you'll learn how to cut:

  • Quilt Planning - now that you have fabrics chosen the next steps are where to place them in your quilt which we walk through together.
  • Rotary Cutter and Ruler Basics
  • How to cut Background fabrics two different ways, for individual piecing and strip piecing. 
  • How to cut Pre-Cut 10" Squares, Fat Eighths, Fat Quarters, 1/4 yards.
  • Width of Fabric strips for the binding of your quilt.
  • Left handed? We also include cutting instructions and diagrams for our lefties!
  • Troubleshooting

 

 

 

Sewing

 

In this module, we will learn about our sewing machines, how to use them, and how to sew our pieces of fabric together. This module is two weeks so that you have plenty of time to learn the ropes and practice!

Module Highlights:

  • Sewing machine orientation and every step in how to set up your machine.
  • Complete a Sewing Machine Scavenger Hunt to learn all about your machine.
  • Learn how to sew a simple straight stitch to piece your fabrics together.
  • Learn about sewing machine settings for piecing.
  • Learn how to test your seam allowance so that you create accurate quilt blocks.
  • Learn how to save time and thread with chain piecing!
  • Quick Tips and Troubleshooting on the common challenges.

 

Quilt Top Assembly

 

In this module, you will assemble your quilt tops! It's time to see all of the pieces come together!

Module Highlights:

  • Learn how to assemble rows and nest seams.
  • Learn how to construct a quilt border.
  • Learn how to sew borders to the edges of your quilt.
  • Learn how to assemble all pieces into a quilt top.
  • Quick tips and troubleshooting advice for every step.

 

 

 

 

Quilt Assembly

 

We're almost there! Now it's time to create your quilt sandwiches and have fun with quilting designs! This module is two weeks so that you have plenty of time to get your quilt quilted!

Module Highlights:

  • Learn about various quilting methods and choose what works best for you.
  • Learn how prepare your quilt top for basting.
  • Learn how to create your quilt backing.
  • Learn different basting techniques and baste your quilt.
  • Learn three different  quilting designs for quilting  with your walking foot.
  • Learn about sewing machine settings for quilting.
  • Learn how to bury threads.

Binding & Quilt Care

If we haven't already met, my name is Brittany and I am the owner, designer and educator behind Lo & Behold Stitchery. I have been designing quilt patterns since 2017 and teaching online quilting classes since 2021. Before quilting, I was a Neonatal ICU nurse for 7+ years, where I especially enjoyed the teaching aspect of the role. It was here that I discovered my love for meeting others where they are to transform their skillset and knowledge in a way that may not initially seem possible. 

Now, as a online educator and  designer, I am honored to have a similar role in the lives of others.
